Elite Track Classic at Dinwiddie High School May 11, 2001

Valley district performers shined on a warm Friday night in southside Virginia. The prestigious Southern Track Classic is known for national class performances and no one left disappointed.

Evan Kays of Stuarts Draft

Lindsey Neuberger-Cox High School

and

Jennifer Showker-Spotswood High School

Stuarts Draft's Evan Kays made a move to join elite milers in Virginia with a 4:13 mile. Kays came from fourth place in the final lap to run away by 5 meters with the title of Southern Classic Champion. He outdistanced Meador of AAA Cave Spring and Region opponent Cadle of Western Albemarle.

Lockhart of Handley (meet record two mile-8:57) has a 4:08 mile this spring. This sets up a showdown mile between Kays, Lockhart and Cadle in the Region II championship at Potamac Falls H.S. on May 19th.

Spotswood's Jennifer Showker came from fourth position to finish runner-up 2nd place behind national phenomenon Lindsey Neuberger in the discus. Sophmore Showker's throw of 117' 8" edged AAA senior Latoya Porter of AAA Manchester.

Neuberger won the shot put with a throw heard across the country of 49' 4.5". That throw is the second longest throw for a girl in modern Virginia High School track history. It ranks third in the nation this spring. Lindsey is just a junior at Cox High School in Virginia Beach.

Spotswood's Boys 4x100 relay team finished fourth in the fast heat and 6th overall with a time of 43.81. Region II King George finished fourth setting up a heated race in the Region II championships.
