The Virginia AA State Meet JMU June 1st, 2002
The meet was full of excitement as always at Bridgeforth Stadium. Megan Mlinarchik fulfilled a season destiny by breaking the state record in the Pole Vault and added a 5th in the high jump. Turner Ashby's Adam Wright came very close to doing the same in his winning effort. Macy Zwanzig won the 800m run with a come from behind gutsy effort(and from lane 9) over the favored Western Albemarle runner. Lauren Diggs of Stuarts Draft capped a great season with a runner-up performance in the 400m. Fort's Claire Thomason also was runner-up in the Shot Put and 5th in the Discus. Harrisonburg's Jamie Murphy stuck a huge triple jump to finish runner-up and qualify for nationals. Turner Ashby's 4x800 Relay team finished state runner-up in a close and exciting race.

Spotswood's Jennifer Showker was a dual all-stater in the discus and shot put with third places in both events. Rachel Haley placed a career best 3rd in the 3200 meters running step for step with the Jefferson Forest wonder girls. Spotswood's Boys 4x800m relay team proved they can run with the best with a third place finish. Harrisonburg boy sprinters took 3rd in the 4x100m relay and Broadway's Jeremy Withers got a PR and 3rd place in the Pole Vault.

Finishing out the All-State performances were Blazer Chris Heitz in the 800m, Rockbridge County's Angela Thompson in the 300 hurdles, Amanda Renalds of Turner Ashby scored dual finishes in the Discus and Shot Put. Fort's Michael Portch in the high jump and John Huffman in the Vault, Chris Smith and Cassie Landes of Spotswood in the Vault finished out the great individual performances.

All-state relay efforts were turned in by Turner Ashby's Boys 4x100 team, as well as Spotswood Girls 4x100m team. The Blazer girls had 3 of 5 runners sick but found 4 who could still run the race in perhaps the guttiest performance of the day.

Still mindful of a challenging school year, Bridgeforth stadium

paid honor to the colors during the meet.

The Knights Distance Divas hang around for trophy duty.
