Double Winners Amber Showalter and T.J. Burkholder are the Valley Blue Chip Throwers. |
Great weather and 19 teams went for it at Turner Ashby in Bridgewater Saturday. The Valley had some great performances and gained an appreciation for just how strong the "other valley" track programs are. Strasburg and Buffalo Gap brought some very impressive girls performers in hurdlers, throwers and jumpers. Throwers and vaulters continued a torrid early season pace. Big performances included a 13' vault from Broadway Chad Harpine and a 9'6" vault from teammate Elizabeth Reeves, Waynesboro Travis Berrry stuck a 43'10" triple jump, a 153'11" discus throw from TA T.J. Burkholder and Spotswood Amber Showalter's 112' discus throw. Burkholder won the shot with 49'11" and Showalter won the shot with 36'1". They were the Valley's only individual double winners. Hurdlers and jumpers also were "gettin' 'er done". TA Cori Burkholder had a great day in the hurdles, but was humbled by Strasburg Lauri Hines. RE Kaylor Vaughn high jumped 5'2" and long jumped 16'7". Vaughn and the rest of the field watched as Buffalo Gap Angela Jenkins conducted a jump clinic with meet record jumps of 18'9.5 and 36'7.5. A huge day for the little lady from the Gap. Harrisonburg Justin German enjoyed a Winkler'less day in the high jump. Fastest man bragging rights for the Valley are still up in the air with TA Daniel Harvey winning the 100m and Harrisonburg Andy Owah winning the 200m. Fort Defiance Matt Bailey ran to the top of the Valley in the 800m with a 2:01. His teammate Derek Hizer won the 1600m(4:36.68). Fort has a strong 1-2 punch in the distance races. In the Relays, TA 4x400 team of Burkholder, Shoemaker, Morris, and Harvey look to return to the state meet. Harrisonburg 4x800 team of German, Clopper, Aikens, and Shroades. Next stop for Valley teams will be the beginning of the regular season schedule meets, then the Gus Lacy Invitational meet Saturday at Fork Union (a new meet on a brand new track) or Appamattox Co. Invitational. |
