State Meet James Madison University New Resevoir St. Track Facility June 4-5, 2004 |

It was a meet for only the most rugged and pure track fans. Valley tracksters showed great courage, guts and tenacity to compete under the most severe conditions seen in recent years. Friday night was a steady misting rain with times of blowing downpour. Saturday was uncharacteristically cold and overcast. Throwers and jumpers suffered Saturday from standing water, drainage issues and take-off boards that were not designed to drain. SLOP! The Valley's Middle Distance corp shined with Turner Asbhy's Boys 4x800 leading the way to a state championship. The team of Billington, Cohee, Miller and Shoemaker went out on a mission in the rain racing for the record. Their 8:02.56 fell short but was a valiant effort. They were at or near the top all season in this event. Turner Ashby's Michael Billington was State Runner-Up in the 800m with a time of 1:57.45. Stuart Draft's Brad O'Neil ran an inspired 9:47.60 in a blowing downpour in the 3200m, the final event on Friday night. |
Once again the Valley throwers were hard to deal with. Spotswood's Nathan Turner pulled the hat trick with an outdoor Shot Put championship (added to his indoor championship). The local throws gallery were electrified with a come from behind throw by Nathan on his last put of 55ft. 11.5 inches. This throw took out frustration from a spanking the week prior by Brentsville's Jason Cook. The Valley's vaulters were again on the winner's stand in both girls and boys. Beth Wilkins of Rockbridge led the way for the girls with a State Runner-Up 9ft. 9inches. On the boys side, Broadway's Chad Harpine was State Runner-Up at 13ft. 6inches. Kaylor Vaughn of R.E. Lee was steady all year and finished 4th in the high jump with a jump of 5ft. The Harrisonburg Girls 4x100 and Turner Ashby Boys 4x400 relay teams were All-State in very tough fields. Fort Defiance's Girls 4x800 relay team finished 5th and served notice with NO graduating seniors who is the team to beat next year in the valley. |
