Scholarships Established - Spring '04 In
memory of Beverly Good-USATF Master Official, and Referee of
the Virginia State AA Championships during the span of the
event hosted at JMU. By Joe and Debbie Showker Bev Good is known by track patrons,
athletes and officials for decades of service to regional
NCAA schools, The Virginia High School League and The Valley
District. He was well known throughout the middle
Atlantic states for his service as a meet Referee and
official for Track and Field. Bev Good lived a passion
and love for track at all levels. He loved exciting competition and the
drama of athletic performances. He enjoyed working with
athletes who demonstrated sportsmanship, mental toughness
and a fierce competitive nature. This love defined him as a referee and a
track enthusiast. Many times Bev's voice could be heard on
the infield marveling at a performance he had just seen, or
a meet he had just worked. He had a special desire to get to know
athletes and was acutely aware of those that continued on
from high school to college with their track
careers. The purpose of the Fund is to support
post-secondary educational scholarships for qualifying
graduates of the Southern Valley and Massanutten District High Schools to attend a 4-year
college or university. Scholarships will be awarded to
students who plan to participate in a sanctioned track
program of that college or university and who have not been
awarded a full scholarship. 1. Two $500 scholarships will be made
available annually for award to one male and one female
track athlete from the Southern Valley and Massanutten Districts. The athlete must be
accepted to a 4 year college or university and plan to
continue his/her track career at the NCAA level. Full
scholarship athletes are ineligible for the award.
Consideration will be given to the student's character and
sportsmanship during competition. Coaches may submit
nominations prior to the Southern Valley and Massanutten District
Meets. 2. The scholarship program supported by
the Fund will be administrated by an advisory board of local
track patrons, officials and a named School representative
of the Southern Valley and Massanutten Districts. This board will consider applicants
nominated by coaches from each Southern Valley and Massanutten District High
Schools. 3. The board will review and name the
scholarship recipients the week following the Southern Valley and Massanutten
District Championship Track Meets. 4. Students nominated for this award will
be recognized in local media outlets and receive a framed
certificate. Each recipient school will also receive a
certificate for display by the school.

Christopher Newport University![]() Coach Gary Buggs says that "many of her personal attributes include intelligence, enthusiasm, positive work ethic, competitive spirit, dedication, and love of the sport. She is intelligent enough to understand and execute the complex technique of hurdling rather than just running fast and jumping over barriers. Yet, with all her accomplishments in track, Mandy remains modest, humble, outgoing, and extremely well grounded". | George Mason University![]() Coach John Childs said this about Alex: "Throughout my ten year coaching career at Turner Ashby, I’ve been privileged to have had some very talented athletes with exceptional character and an unbelievable work ethic. He is an exceptional young man of the highest character. He is a leader in the classroom and on the track". |
