State AA Meet 2008

...and finally a photo slide strip that may shed some light on the girls 4x100 relay.

The leading relay team was DQ'd by both exchange judges (unanimous) for being out of the zone on the 2nd exchange in the 4x100 relay. Both exchange judges are USATF seasoned officals that have been umpires at the AA state meet for years, as was the head umpire who also concurred with the decision.

While this picture series is not 100% conclusive, it does shed solid light on the fact that the relay team DQ'd was deep, very deep into their zone as can be verified by the other two teams in the zone.  Both other teams #2 to #3 have already passed the baton while the leader has not even taken the baton.

Add to that the fact that leader's #2 and #3  are way out ahead of the other two teams (notice the yellow zone triangles), it's probable looking at these pictures that the exchange could have happen beyond the zone limit.  Note the white arrow showing the hand of the outbound runner for the leader hasn't even griped or taken possession of the baton yet in the final picture. Judgement calls by umpires in track and field are done at the moment by the officials entrusted with those calls.  They are not appeallable by rule, much like those decisions of the starter or judge watching a take-off board.

Regrets to the York H.S. girls who had a fantastic season and a #1 ranking in AA.
