Brett Olinger-Broadway H.S. and Katie Cummings Fort Defiance H.S. 2008 Recipients!
Brett Olinger ![]() VHSL GROUP AA MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Brett Olinger of Broadway High School Brett is a three-sport athlete, earning 11 varsity letters in football, indoor and outdoor track during his high school career. He is the reigning Group AA champion in the 300 meter hurdles winning the event as a sophomore and junior and will be going for a three-peat this season. As a senior, he was named a first team all-district running back in football and added all-state honors in the 55 meter hurdles in indoor track with a second place finish. In addition, he accumulated seven indoor track and outdoor track district and regional individual championships in the 55 meter, 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles. Not only is Brett a talented athlete, but he is also a talented student in the classroom maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Brett plans to study business management at Radford University in the fall. She's currently ranked in the top 3 of shot put and Discus at the State AA level. She's won numerous District, Region and Invitational championships with her throwing. Her PRs are 129' and 43' in the throws, both significant performances worthy of Div. I attention. Katie is also Fort Defiance's yearbook editor, president of the FCA Chapter, member of National Honor Society, and a role model for other students. She will attend Bridgewater College next year joining former Valley Division III All-American Thrower Nathan Turner. The Final Regular Season Rankings in AA Massanutten and Valley Districts for 2008
State Class Elite Athletes Abound in the Mountains of Virginia! Home of the AA State Championships May 30,31st.

Valley Tracksters warm-up for the district meets with PRs and school records at the ELITE meet at Sports Backers stadium in Richmond Friday night.
Katie Cummings of Fort Defiance PR'd with a discus throw of 129'6" and a shot toss of 40'9.25 inches for two Runner Up finishes. Justin Smith of TA was runner-up in the shot with a toss of 53'8.25". Alex Ott of TA placed third in the mile with a time of 4:19.62. Spotswood's 4x100m relay team (after a switch in handoff order) turned in a 49.87 relay for 6th place and a new school record. That team is Brianna Mitchell to Christen Showker to Jessy Moubray to Kayla Young. Ricky Suggs finished 7th in the long jump with a jump of 22'3.25 and Jessy Moubray triple jumped to 6th place with a 36'3.5" performance. The Harrisonburg Girls were 9th with 10:32.03
Louisa Last Chance | Results
Harrisonburg High School attended and turned in some improved scores including Nafziger's 3200 of 9:37.24 (1st place) moving him into the Valley's #1 spot in that event. Keith Thomas finished 2nd in the 1600 with a 4:37.9. Sarah Hamilton finished 2nd in the Discus and third in the shot put and Mandy Kaufmann picked up a pair of 3rds in the hurdles.
Millbrook Invitational | Results
Broadway ,Turner Ashby and Spotswood traveled to Winchester for the Friday Night Millbrook Invite
Paige Price of TA wins the high hurdles with 16.64, TA's 4x800 girls win with 10:20.20 (Beydler, Skidmore, Long, Young), Craig Burkholder wins the highs and Pedro Alonso wins the long jump. Spotswood's Printz wins the Discus.
Augusta County Track Challenge | Results - Note times are hand held
R.E. Lee, Fort, and Waynesboro post some big scores as they battle their neighbors on home turf.
Winners on the Girls side from the Southern Valley District include: Lee's Destiny Simmons (100,200), Fort's Whitney Fulk (800, 1600), Fort's Jasmine Diggs in the 300 hurdles, Fort's Relay Girls (400m, 1600m) and Lee's 4x800. Draft's Christina Fenske jumps a state class 5'7" in the high jump, and Katie Cummings dominates the throws.
On the boys side: Lee's Runners almost swept the meet! They are Chris Williams (200,400) and Rajah Jenkins(100), Andrew Lightner(800, 1600). Draft's Lucas Moffett held Lee's Kearney off in the 3200. Chris Wazsnicky of Fort won the 300 hurdles. The relays were spread among Waynesboro in the 4x100, Fort in the 4x400, and Lee in the 4x800. The jumps were won by Lee's Scott(HJ), Forts Shreckhise in the vault, Jenkins of Lee in the LJ and Will Walter of Wboro in the TJ. Fort's Luke Thomason won the shot with a PR of 46'4.25.

Alex Ott of TA turns in a 9:37.58 in the 3200, Bryant Clopper of Harrisonburg runs a 4:21.78 1600, and Dan Nafziger of HHS runs a 1:59.76 in the 800m
Jesse Ritchie of TA becomes the Valley's Top 200m runner, Jeff Duncan in the Vault ties the top vault and the Ott cousins lead the way in the distance and 3200m relay to put TA Boys into the drivers seat for the Massanutten Title.
